First Meeting: Tuesday 12th September

Filed under: Meetings — Marcus Downing @ 11:50 pm

The details are confirmed, so can announce that the first meeting of the Basingstoke Anime Society will be held on the 12th September at 7pm. It’ll be held in The Castle, very near the train and bus stations. Attendance is free, as long as everybody’s willing to buy some drinks.

The plan for the first night is this: we’ll be showing the first episode of a whole bunch of different series, and then taking votes on which series to start watching properly the following week. So if you want to watch the right sort of stuff, be sure to turn up the first week and be heard.

Please note: this event does take place in a pub, and some of the material we’ll be showing is probably unsuitable for a younger audience, particularly later in the evening.

  1. I would certainly be interested in coming along to find out more but I am working in Paris much of the time so I will come if I can make it.

  2. Sure - there’s no membership fee or anything, so people are free to come and go as they please (although ten minutes after the start would be a little dispiriting…)

What are you doing in Paris?

  3. Hi Marcus

I work as a consultant and the contract I am currently working on, the HQ is in Paris so I spend a lot of time there, however I do get to work from home every once in a while so I am hoping I can work it so I am home that week.

  4. Will we be watching any movies or will it just be a tv series?

  5. For now we’re just planning to show series. Once we’re up and running we can start planning other things if people want them. For example, we might run special ‘catch-up nights’ for people who walk into a series half-way through and want to see the first dozen episodes in a batch.

The legal situation is more complex for films. Anime societies work with the permission of the anime companies like ADV and Beez, who let us show series because they understand that it can help to promote fandom and hence increase their market. But a one-off film doesn’t work the same way, especially a high-profile one like FF7: Advent Children. At the very least we’d need to charge entry, something that isn’t really viable at The Castle, and that we’d prefer to avoid anyway.

    So… later, maybe.

  6. Perhaps we move onto movies once we’ve worked through all the series? 2030 or so?

  7. I expect by 2030 there’ll be at least a few series I’ll want to see again. I must watch GTO again at some point. And CCS. And that cool one with the… and all the big… and they were like… *sigh* that one was great.

  8. Hey, what’s considered a ‘younger audience’? xD
