Our first completed series
Those of you who stayed to the end last night will be aware that we reached the end of Beating Angel, and also that we asked you to suggest things to replace it with. Please, please, do so using the comments feature below or by emailing marcus@basingstokeanimesociety.com the sooner you respond the more likely you are to get what you want.
If you don’t have any specific suggestions, feel free to make vague generalised suggestions (eg. Something wierd and funny) as this is almost as helpful.

The King is dead. Long live the King.
If people don’t make enough suggestions, we’re just going to pick stuff for you. And you’ve seen what our taste is like.

We’ve been asking people for weird and funny series, and yet most of the suggestions we’ve had are for deep, violent and depressing (Samurai X, Wolf’s Rain, etc). Does this mean people don’t want to watch comedy, or do you just all have a sick sense of humour?
Comment by Marcus Downing — September 27, 2006 @ 12:56 pm
sick sense of humour!
Comment by Chii — September 27, 2006 @ 1:37 pm
Would anyone care if we didn’t replace it, and instead extended the intervals to give people time to chat?
Comment by Robert Green — September 27, 2006 @ 2:38 pm
Watt about “puni puni poemi” for next week and after that maybe something like “Renkin San-kyuu Magical Pokaan” Or if your up for it “eiken OVA”
Comment by Lydon J Jauncey — September 27, 2006 @ 3:17 pm
Puni Puni Poemi is possibly more the sort of thing we’re looking at. The other two you mention look… like they might only appeal to the male section of the audience. I know the audience is already two thirds male, but we’d rather not exacerbate that trend. This is supposed to be a society that everybody can be part of.
But maybe I’m wrong - maybe the women are perfectly okay with us showing evil perverted filth? Opinions? (No, we are NEVER going to show Yaoi)
Comment by Marcus Downing — September 27, 2006 @ 3:54 pm
as a ‘woman’(sick sense of humour or not) i’m not interested in perverted filth - it gets boring quickly
Comment by Chii — September 27, 2006 @ 4:25 pm
ok I admit eiken is perverted filth. but in Renkin San-kyuu Magical Pokaan, men are show as sex objects and blivering idiots but the is still some fan serves for the male in audience I think it has a good balance but that’s just my opinion

FLCL is wierd and reasonably funny… Or drop the occasional ep of Pugyuru throughout the night. Same could be said of Damekko Doubutsu. The only problem with these are the lengths: FLCL is 6 eps, Pugyuru and Damekko Doubutsu are 5 mins an ep and there aren’t that many of them (13 and 26 respectively).
Slightly longer shows with comedy appeal could include Gatekeepers (24 eps), Genshiken (13 I think), Jungle wa itsumo Hale nochi Guu (26 eps).
I can probably come up with more, but that’s a good list for the top of my head.

Never going to show Yaoi? that sucks…
How about You’re Under Arrest! OVAs. I can bring that along, but I’m guessing from what I’ve spoken to Marcus about, you’d prefer stuff ripped and on the computer ready to show
Comment by Mr Onishi — September 27, 2006 @ 10:42 pm
It’s a lot easier to show stuff that’s already ripped, certainly. Ripping is something we’re capable of if we have the time… but we don’t. It can be very time-consuming to get it right, although thankfully I’m not as perfectionist as some. It’s especially difficult on older or more analogue material where the transfer to DVD has included noise, rainbowing, jitter - and as a result of the bandwidth lost coping with all of those, artefacting. It’s also sometimes harder on UK releases than US ones, because they re-interpret the US version and end up with messier compression and interlacing. For example, FMP?Fumoffu looks great on a TV, but if you look at it frame by frame it’s horrible.
Do the OVAs of You’re Under Arrest depend on the series at all? One reason we’d hesitate before showing Samurai X is because it’s connected to the Kenshin story, which people haven’t seen.

Rest assured, only the incurable geeks will be culled. Viable specimens will be kept alive for future research.

I have the full series of Tenchi Muyo(comedy harem) and the first five episodes of
Azumanga Daioh (school comedy) on DVD.
If I bring both over both next week and Azumanga is popular then I will find the other series.
Failing that bring on Puni Puni Poemi!
See you all next Week.

No, You’re Under Arrest doesn’t need anything else. It can stand alone as the episodes start from the beginning when the 2 girls get together
Comment by Mr Onishi — September 29, 2006 @ 4:45 pm
I don’t know about showing Tenchi Muyo, but I certainly wouldn’t mind borrowing it - it’s one of those classics that everyone’s supposed to have seen. We have all of Azumanga already.
Comment by Marcus Downing — September 30, 2006 @ 12:57 pm
How about something like Great Teacher Onizuka? It’s perverted on one level, but really quite deep and serious on another level. And really quite uplifting.
